Philadelphia, PA – PGA TOUR - TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP, TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut - Webb Simpson won't have long to bask in his U.S. Open Championship glow.
The man who went 68-68 on the weekend at Olympic Club is still scheduled to play at this week's Travelers Championship. Simpson's buddy and fellow major winner, Masters champion Bubba Watson, is also scheduled to tee it up Thursday.
Nine winners of 10 PGA Tour events will play this week, including Players Champion Matt Kuchar, two-time winner this season Hunter Mahan, Watson and Simpson.
Fredrik Jacobson is the defending champion this week, coming off a decent showing at Olympic Club. He played in the penultimate group Sunday at the U.S. Open, just two off the lead to start, but a final-round, 5-over 75 dropped him into a tie for 15th.
Last year, Jacobson finally earned his first PGA Tour victory in just 188 starts. He shot a 4-under 66 in the final round and won by a single stroke over both John Rollins and Ryan Moore.
Moore had a great chance, but struggled on the 18th. He drove into a fairway bunker, then muscled his second into a greenside trap. After a brief distraction, Moore regrouped, went through his routine again, then nearly holed the bunker shot for birdie.
Moore missed the 4-foot par putt to fall one back. Jacobson got a great bounce off the tee in the group behind, hit a 7-iron to 14 feet and two-putted for that elusive first win.
Michael Thompson took fourth here one year ago and is riding the momentum of his runner-up U.S. Open finish.
Golf Channel has the first two rounds, then CBS takes over on the weekend.
Next week is the AT&T National at Congressional, the site of last year's U.S. Open. Nick Watney won the 2011 AT&T National, although it was staged at Aronimink.
EUROPEAN TOUR
BMW INTERNATIONAL, Golf Club Gut Larchenhof, Cologne, Germany - Last year, Pablo Larrazabal won the playoff of Spaniards when he defeated Sergio Garcia on the fifth extra hole.
After both stumbled a bit into the playoff, it came down to a missed 4-foot par putt by Garcia.
All was not lost for Garcia. By virtue of his second-place finish, he gained entry into the field for the British Open Championship last year. He tied for ninth last year and ended a nearly 3-year winless streak with back-to-back victories in Spain.
It'll be a huge home crowd for Martin Kaymer and Bernhard Langer, the two most famous German golfers.
Kaymer, who tied for 15th at the U.S. Open, captured this event in 2008 in a playoff to become the first home winner of the event. Golf Club Gut Larchenhof is about 20 miles from Kaymer's home town of Dusseldorf.
Langer has been a runner-up five times at this championship.
Golf Channel will broadcast all four rounds.
Next week is the Irish Open at Royal Portrush. Reigning British Open champion Darren Clarke will return from injury and Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington and defending champion Simon Dyson are all expected to be on hand.
LPGA TOUR
MANULIFE FINANCIAL LPGA CLASSIC, Grey Silo Golf Course, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada - After a one-week break, the LPGA Tour heads to our neighbor to the north for the inaugural Manulife Financial LPGA Classic.
This is the first of two trips to Canada for the LPGA Tour this season. Brittany Lincicome will defend her title at the end of August at the Canadian Women's Open.
Reigning LPGA Champion Shanshan Feng headlines the field, along with Kraft Nabisco Championship winner Sun Young Yoo, Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Cristie Kerr and Suzann Pettersen.
World No. 1 Yani Tseng is not competing this week.
Golf Channel has all of the action this week.
Next up is the NW Arkansas Championship, which was won last year by Tseng in a playoff over Amy Yang.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
MONTREAL CHAMPIONSHIP, Vallee du Richelieu Vercheres, Sainte-Julie, Quebec, Canada - A new venue and a slight date change didn't hamper the strength of the field this week.
Played the first week of July the last two years at Fontainebleau Golf Club, this is the Champions Tour's only visit to Canada.
John Cook won last year's title by three strokes over second-round leader Chien-Soon Lu. Cook set a new tournament record with his 21-under-195 total, surpassing Larry Mize's mark from the year prior.
Cook won the 1983 Canadian Open on the PGA Tour. His victory last year was his eighth on the Champions Tour and he has not visited the winner's circle since.
Michael Allen, who availed himself nicely at the U.S. Open last week, is the leading money winner on the Champions Tour and in the field this week. Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman, who are second and third, are not playing.
Next week is the Senior Players Championship, the third major of the season, at Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, Penn. Fred Couples won in a playoff over Cook last August at Westchester Country Club. Greg Norman announced he will play this year.
NATIONWIDE TOUR
WICHITA OPEN, Crestview Country Club, Wichita, Kansas - Lee Williams won the Mexico Open two weeks ago and will be back in the field this week to try for two in a row.
Last year, Mathew Goggin birdied the final hole to hold off Kyle Thompson. It was Goggin's second win of the year on the Nationwide Tour. He graduated to the PGA Tour this season and has struggled, making five cuts in 12 starts and his best finish was a tie for 35th at Pebble Beach.
This tournament is one of the four original events on the Nationwide Tour. The Wichita Open, Knoxville Open, Price Cutter Charity Championship and Boise Open have been on the schedule since the tour began in 1990.
There is no television coverage this week.
Next week is the United Leasing Championship at Victoria National Golf Club. It is a new event on the Nationwide Tour and will be staged at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburg, Ind.
CANADIAN TOUR
ATB FINANCIAL CLASSIC, Windermere Golf Club, Edmonton, Albert, Canada - The third event this week in Canada actually comes from the Canadian Tour.
Last year, Hugo Leon shot an even-par 71 on Sunday to win by a stroke over Jose de Jesus Rodriguez. It was Leon's first Canadian Tour victory and it came at a different site than this year. Leon won at Bearspaw Country Club.
Leon will be on hand to defend his title this week.
There is no television coverage.
Next week is the Syncrude Boreal Open, which was won last year by Danny Sahl.
