Jackson State University football coach Rick Comegy didn't have to look far to find an offensive coordinator who he thinks can keep the Tigers scoring in bunches.

Comegy has promoted Derrick McCall to the position. The last two seasons, McCall coached Walter Payton Award finalist Casey Therriault and the rest of the quarterbacks while Jackson State led the SWAC in scoring each time.

In 2008 and '09, McCall served as Jackson State's wide receivers coach.

Prior to arriving at Jackson State, McCall coached at Shaw University as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator, and at Tuskegee University, where he served as interim head football coach and won a SIAC championship and Pioneer Bowl championship.

The coaching veteran was a quarterback for Jackson State from 1979-82.

Jackson State opens its season on Sept. 1 at Mississippi State.
