NAIRN, Scotland – The United States has dominated the early play at the Curtis Cup, winning all three opening-round foursomes against Britain and Ireland on opening day Friday.
The duo of Austin Ernst and Brooke Pancake set the tone for the three-day amateur event, rallying to win the first match 1 up against Kelly Tidy and Amy Boulden in cold, windy and overcast conditions at the Nairn Golf Club course in northern Scotland.
Amy Anderson and Tiffany Lua combined to win 2 and 1 against Holly Clyburn and Bronte Law.
The upset during the 37th edition of the biennial Curtis Cup came when the Irish pair of Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow lost 5 and 4 to Lindy Duncan and Lisa McCloskey.
Maguire and Meadows were 6 down after nine holes. They won the 11th and 12th but conceded defeat at the 14th.
Also Friday, U.S. team captain Pat Cornett was taken to a hospital after injuring her leg on the edge of a grandstand. Cornett was traveling in a cart on the first hole during the afternoon fourball matches.
