Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Royals recalled pitcher Ryan Verdugo from Triple-A Omaha and optioned pitcher Will Smith to the same club on Tuesday.
Verdugo has yet to appear in a major league game. The 25-year-old lefty is 3-1 with a 3.61 earned run average in 11 starts in Omaha. In 62 1/3 innings, he has struck out 52 and walked 30.
Smith made three starts with the Royals after being recalled on May 22. He struggled, allowing 14 runs in 14 innings, including six homers. On Monday, Smith gave up seven runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Twins.
