The San Diego Padres have designated right- handed pitcher Jeff Suppan for assignment.

Suppan went 2-3 with a 5.28 ERA over six starts for the Padres this year. The 37-year-old has a 140-146 record with a 4.70 ERA in 448 career games (417 starts) with the Boston Red Sox (1995-97; 2003), Arizona Diamondbacks (1998), Kansas City Royals (1998-2002), Pittsburgh Pirates (2003), St. Louis Cardinals (2004-06; 2010), Milwaukee Brewers (2007-10) and Padres (2012).

San Diego also recalled catcher Yasmani Grandal from Triple-A Tucson. He hit .317 with 10 doubles, four home runs, 23 RBI, 22 runs scored and 21 walks in 34 games for Tucson this year.

The switch-hitting catcher was acquired by the Padres this past offseason along with right-handers Brad Boxberger and Edinson Volquez and infielder Yonder Alonso from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for right-hander Mat Latos.
