Orioles OF Markakis has wrist surgery

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis had surgery Friday for a broken right wrist and is expected to be for three to four weeks.

The operation was performed by Dr. Brian Schofield in Sarasota, Fla.

"There was no structural damage to the rest of the bone, so there's no healing process in there," Markakis said before the Orioles played at Tampa Bay. "When the doc went in, he said everything looked great in there. No other injuries. It's just a matter of healing up and waiting to get the stitches out."

Markakis will examined again on Monday, at which time he could be cleared to do range of motion work. He is hitting .256 with eight home runs and 26 RBIs.

"Good news, all things considered," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said.

Baltimore placed Markakis on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of infielder-outfielder Bill Hall from Triple-A Norfolk.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Hall, second baseman Brian Roberts was transferred from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.

This will be the first trip to the disabled list for the 28-year-old Markakis, one of Baltimore's most durable players. He played in at least 160 games in each of the previous three seasons.

"I want to be back as quick as possible," Markakis said. "I'll still be able to run, still be able to throw. Do everything except for swinging."

The injury is believed to have occurred more than a week ago when Markakis slid into a base. He then aggravated his ailing wrist during his final at-bat Tuesday in Toronto.

"Two, three weeks ago, slid into second base to break up a double play and shifted a little more weight on my backhand than I wanted to," Markakis said. "It kind of felt like a jam. Nothing alarming. I played the last couple weeks and I was able to take a 100-percent swing."

Roberts, coming back from concussion symptoms, is on a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie. The Orioles said Roberts will join Norfolk for an eight-game road trip on Tuesday.

"He's feeling good," Showalter said. "Getting consistenly good reports."

NOTES: Showalter said RHP Matt Lindstrom (right middle finger) could soon start throwing off a half-mound. ... C Taylor Teagarden (strained back) has resumed baseball activities. ... LHP Zach Britton (left shoulder) allowed two runs over seven innings in a rehab start Thursday with Bowie.
