Former England international Emile Heskey was one of three senior players to be released by Aston Villa on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old joined the Villains from Wigan in 2009, but is coming off a season in which he scored just one goal in 28 league appearances.
Villa, which is without a manager, also moved to let go of goalkeeper Brad Guzan and defender Carlos Cuellar.
Guzan arrived at the club in 2008, only to be stuck behind former goalkeeper Brad Friedel and current number one Shay Given. Therefore, the 27-year-old American has seen limited opportunities, starting six league matches this past term.
Cuellar has been with Villa since 2007 when he arrived from Rangers, and despite having the ability to fill in at multiple spots across the back line, the Spaniard's time with the club is up after he played in 18 league matches this past campaign.
