The Cardinals placed infielder/outfielder Matt Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of a right oblique strain.
Carpenter exited Tuesday night's game following a swing that left him in discomfort.
In 39 games, the rookie Carpenter is hitting .288 with three home runs and 20 RBI.
The Cardinals purchased the contract of catcher Steven Hill from Triple-A Memphis to take Carpenter's place on the roster.
Hill made his major league debut with the Cardinals in 2010 and went 1-for-3, including a home run. He was hitting .257 with four home runs and 11 RBI for Memphis.
