Toronto Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 20.

Arencibia batted .360 and tied for the American League lead with four home runs, 10 RBI and seven runs scored in six games last week.

The 26-year-old also hit home runs in three consecutive games (May 16-18) for the first time in his career.

Arencibia is now batting .256 on the season with seven home runs, seven doubles and 26 RBI.

Other players considered for the weekly honor were Dayan Viciedo of the Chicago White Sox; Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones; Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder; Boston Red Sox pitchers Josh Beckett and Jon Lester and Kansas City Royals pitcher Bruce Chen.
