Paris, France – Montpellier will try to hold off big-spending PSG on Sunday for its first-ever Ligue 1 title, while eight clubs in the other half of the table battle for survival on the final day of the season.
Montpellier holds a three-point cushion over PSG at the top of the table and a draw at Auxerre would be enough to secure the title over the Paris club, which has spent well over $100 million on transfers since last summer.
All that stands between Montpellier and the title is Auxerre, which is last in the standings and already assured of relegation.
"Now we are sure of playing in the group stage of the Champions League and we have a little challenge in front of us as we now need to go and obtain a point at Auxerre," Montpellier coach Rene Girard said.
Should Auxerre produce a miracle, PSG needs a victory at relegation-threatened Lorient to snatch the title.
"This game could be decisive, and we certainly believe. At any rate, for us, it's double or nothing: if we win away to Lorient and Montpellier lose, we will be champions," said PSG's Mohamed Sissoko. "I'm sure we can do it."
St Etienne hosts Bordeaux in a battle for fifth place and a Europa League spot next season. Bordeaux sits fifth, one point ahead of St. Etienne and Rennes.
"It was something we couldn't have hoped for and we stopped talking about Europe at one point," said Bordeaux's Yoan Gouffran. "We got our hope back after a good run and now we've got a final to play at Saint-Etienne."
Lorient enters its match against PSG and the final day in 14th place, but far from safe.
Just two points separate 12th-place Valenciennes and 18th-place Ajaccio. Even Dijon, which is 19th, is within reach of six clubs with one match to play.
Even 12th-place Valenciennes has not secured survival, but can with a tie when it hosts 17th-place Caen. It is the only match featuring two of the clubs with relegation on the line.
Nice, which is 13th, visits fourth-place Lyon, which has already sealed Europa League play next season.
Sochaux enters the final day in 15th, as two straight wins have put it in good shape to survive when it hosts Marseille. Brest, which is 16th, visits Evian.
Ajaccio will try to climb out of 17th when it visits Toulouse, and Dijon will try to pull off a miracle at the bottom, as a win at Rennes could lift it out of the bottom three. Rennes could still finish fifth and reach the Europa.
Lille hosts Nancy with third place and a Champions League berth secured in the day's other match.
