Smalling out of Euro 2012 with groin injury

Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling has been ruled out of Euro 2012 because of a groin injury.

Smalling sustained the problem in United's 2-0 win over Swansea City last weekend, but the injury is worse than initially feared and the 22-year-old will likely require surgery.

England manager Roy Hodgson will have a decision to make in terms of how to replace Smalling for the competition with the boss attempting to figure out if he will bring both John Terry and Rio Ferdinand to the tournament.

Smalling appeared in 19 league games for United this season, scoring one goal.
