The San Diego Padres placed rookie hurler Joe Wieland on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained right elbow.

The move is retroactive to May 7, a day after he pitched 5 2/3 innings in a 6-3 loss to the Miami Marlins.

Wieland, 22, made his major league debut this season and has gone 0-4 with a 4.55 earned run average in five starts.

To fill Wieland's roster spot, the Padres recalled infielder/outfielder James Darnell from Triple-A Tucson.

At the time of his promotion, Darnell was hitting .267 in 31 minor league games with six doubles, seven homers and 21 runs batted in. He appeared in the majors for the first time in 2011, batting .222 in 18 games for San Diego.
