Muller takes over at Illinois State

Illinois State named Dan Muller its new head men's basketball coach on Tuesday.

The position was left open when Tim Jankovich resigned several weeks ago to accept a position at Southern Methodist.

Muller, who as a player led ISU to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1997 and 1998, had been an assistant at Vanderbilt for 12 seasons, helping the Commodores to seven 20-win campaigns and six trips to the NCAAs.

"I'm honored to be the head coach at Illinois State, and it is great to be back home," said Muller. "I have the fortune of coming back to the ISU campus to lead a group (of players) with high character and a lot coming back."

Illinois State lost to Stanford in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament last season and finished with a 21-14 record.

The last time the Redbirds reached the NCAA Tournament was Muller's senior season.

"I'm very happy for Illinois State and I'm very happy for Dan," said current Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings, who also coached Muller throughout his collegiate career. "He's worked hard for this opportunity and I think that the fans, the players, the program and the administration will be very, very pleased and feel very fortunate to have him as their head coach."
