Yaya Toure scored twice in the final 20 minutes and Manchester City edged Newcastle, 2-0, on Sunday at St. James' Park to remain on track for the English Premier League title.
City maintained its cushion on goal differential over Manchester United, which downed Swansea City, 2-0. With the plus-eight edge in goal differential, City just needs a home victory over relegation-threatened QPR next week to seal its first title in 44 years.
Manchester United visits Sunderland for its final match next Sunday.
After nearly 70 exciting scoreless minutes in Newcastle, Toure finally hit the net after he traded passes with Sergio Aguero, then dipped a shot past Magpies goalkeeper Tim Krul and into the bottom corner.
After connecting from outside the area, Toure added his second on an easy tap- in from deep inside the area. Gael Clichy found Toure, and from just six yards out, he slotted home his second goal in the 89th minute.
With United also winning by a two-goal margin, City remains well clear at the top entering the final matchday.
Newcastle lost for the second time in its last three, and sits in fifth place and two points clear of Arsenal for a Champions League place. Newcastle is one behind Tottenham for fourth, but that may not be good enough to seal Champions League play. Newcastle visits Everton for its finale.
Chelsea, which will likely finish outside the top four, would claim the fourth berth from England with a win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final May 19.
Manchester United 2, Swansea City 0
Manchester, England - Paul Scholes and Ashley Young scored in the opening half as Manchester United beat Swansea City, 2-0, on Sunday at Old Trafford to stay level on points with Manchester City atop the English Premier League.
City still maintains a plus-eight edge in goal differential, and could clinch the title with a win over QPR next week. United visits Sunderland in its final match.
Scholes scored the opener with a nice redirection from inside the six-yard box and Young added his goal after he settled a deflected shot and found the lower corner.
Swansea extended a modest unbeaten streak to three matches and could finish in the top half with a win over Liverpool next week. Swansea is currently 12th.
Aston Villa 1, Tottenham 1
Birmingham, England - Emmanuel Adebayor converted a penalty kick in the second half as 10-man Tottenham tied Aston Villa, 1-1, to ease into fourth place and a potential Champions League berth Sunday at Villa Park in the Premier League.
Ciaran Clark fired Villa in front after 35 minutes, but after the sending off of Danny Rose five minutes after halftime, Adebayor hit the equalizer from the spot to earn a share of the points.
Tottenham moved past Newcastle for fourth place, but wasted an opportunity to move up to third - which would guarantee Champions League play. Spurs sits one point behind Arsenal for third entering the final week of the season.
Chelsea is currently outside the top four, but could claim the league's fourth berth in the Champions League should it win this season's final over Bayern Munich on May 19.
Tottenham hosts Fulham in its finale. Aston Villa, which still needs one point next to secure survival, visits Norwich City for its finale.
QPR 1, Stoke City 0
London, England - Djibril Cisse scored in the 89th minute as QPR edged Stoke City, 1-0, at Loftus Road on Sunday to move two points clear of the relegation zone ahead of its Premier League finale against Manchester City.
QPR has won three of its last five to make a run at survival, and could still remain in the top flight with a loss, depending on other results. City needs a win to secure the league title.
Stoke is safe, nine points from the bottom three in 14th, and could finish as high as 11th with a win over West Bromwich next week.
Bolton 2, West Bromwich 2
Bolton, England - Chris Brunt and James Morrison scored in the last 15 minutes as West Bromwich rallied for a 2-2 draw against Bolton at Reebok Stadium on Sunday that left the hosts on the brink of relegation.
Bolton led early after a goal from Martin Petrov and an own goal extended its edge to two goals in the 72nd. But Brunt scored in the 75th and Morrison in the 89th, as West Brom split the points.
Instead of being level on 37 points with QPR and Wigan, Bolton is 18th with 35 points entering its finale at Stoke City next week. West Brom is 10th, and can secure a place in the top half with a win over Arsenal next week.
Fulham 2, Sunderland 1
London, England - Clint Dempsey notched his 17th Premiership goal this season and Moussa Dembele also scored as Fulham edged Sunderland, 2-1, on Sunday to secure a top-half finish.
Dempsey scored in the 12th minute and, after Phillip Bardsley responded in the 34th for Sunderland, Dembele bagged the winner in the 35th.
Fulham could finish as high as seventh with a win over Tottenham next week and Sunderland, which is 11th, will try to move into the top half with a win over Manchester United next week.
Wolverhampton 0, Everton 0
Wolverhampton, England - Everton settled for a 0-0 draw at relegated and last- place Wolverhampton, as it wasted a chance to secure a top-seven finish in the English Premier League.
Everton still holds a one-point cushion over Fulham entering the last weekend, but needs a win against Newcastle to seal the place. Wolverhampton will try to end a forgetful season with a win at Wigan next week.
