Tyrone van Aswegen leads in Athens

South African Tyrone van Aswegen fired a six- under 65 on Saturday to take the third-round lead of the Stadion Classic at UGA.

Van Aswegen finished 54 holes at 13-under 200 and is one stroke clear at the University of Georgia Golf Club.

Van Aswegen is winless on the Nationwide Tour and if he's going to break through on Sunday, he will have to best a tightly bunched leaderboard. Nine players are within three shots of his lead.

Second-round co-leader Billy Horschel shot a two-under 69 and is tied for second place with Bio Kim (64) and former PGA Tour player Woody Austin (66). The trio finished at 12-under 201.

Jim Herman, the other leader after 36 holes, had a one-under 70 on Saturday and shares fifth with Shawn Stefani (66) and Cliff Kresge (68) at 11-under par.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen (66), last week's South Georgia Classic winner Luke List (70) and Brandon Brown (69) are tied for eighth at minus-10.

Van Aswegen didn't get off to the sort of start one expects from a leader. He parred the first six holes, then finally broke into red numbers with a birdie at the par-five seventh. Van Aswegen closed his opening nine with a birdie at No. 9 to make the turn at nine-under par for the championship.

Van Aswegen birdied the next par five, the 12th, but it was his play late that gave him the 54-hole lead.

He birdied the par-three 16th, then eagled the par-five 17th to move into first on his own.

"I hit two good ones there," said van Aswegen. "Big drive, big three-wood. And then I holed a 30-footer."

Van Aswegen parred the last to keep the third-round advantage.

"They always say it's not how you start, it's how you finish," he said.

A few weeks back, van Aswegen led the weather-plagued TPC Stonebrae Championship when darkness stopped play on Saturday. He shot a three-over 73 in the final round and tied for seventh.

"I hope I learned something from it. I just hope it turns out better tomorrow," said van Aswegen. "I know the guys are going to be charging and making birdies. That's expected. I just have to play my game and build some momentum."

NOTES: Van Aswegen isn't the only winless player on the Nationwide Tour near the top of the lead. None of the three golfers in second have won on this circuit, although Austin has three PGA Tour victories.
