Horschel, Herman share 1st at Stadion Classic

Athens, GA – Billy Horschel matched the course record Friday with an eight-under 63 and joined Jim Herman atop the leaderboard after the second round of the Stadion Classic at UGA.

Horschel and Herman, who posted his second straight five-under 66, are knotted at 10-under 132 and own a one-shot lead at the University of Georgia Golf Club.

Last week's South Georgia Classic winner Luke List (67), Josh Broadaway (66), Aron Price (66) and Jason Gore (65) are tied for third place at nine-under 133.

Brandon Brown (69) and Cliff Kresge (66) share seventh at minus-eight.

Horschel began on the 10th tee Friday and picked up five birdies before the turn. He birdied the first, fifth and seventh holes, then got up and down for par at the ninth, just as Herman was tapping in for a birdie on 18. The two holes share a large green, but Horschel didn't notice much around him on Friday.

"Your mind just shuts down, which is the greatest thing in the world," said Horschel. "You don't think much. You see the shot, you see the line on the green and you just go ahead and hit it. You don't worry about the speed."

Herman was on the opposite side of the course from Horschel through most of Friday, but he opened with a bogey at No. 1. He settled down after the early hiccup and birdied four and five.

On the second nine, Herman birdied 11, 12, 17 and 18 and the birdie at the last came after a massive drive.

"I don't know if I hit a sprinkler head or what, but I was able to get it way down the fairway," Herman said of his 344-yard drive on the 488-yard hole. "It was a big advantage to be able to stop the ball and play it off the slope."

First-round leader Kent Jones, who set the course record of 63 on Thursday, struggled to a two-over 73 on Friday and fell into a tie for 13th at six-under par.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen had a one-over 72 in round two and is tied for 20th at minus-five.

NOTES: Defending champion Russell Henley, who, as a member of the University of Georgia golf team, won as an amateur last year, missed the cut, which came at two-under 140...Zack Miller withdrew before the second round.
