Haas stuns Tsonga in Munich

Oft-injured German favorite Tommy Haas upset top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Wednesday's second-round action at the $525,000 BMW Open, a clay-court French Open tuneup.

The wild card former world No. 2 Haas, who has battled shoulder problems for years, surprised the former Australian Open runner-up Tsonga in 6-1, 6-4 fashion at Iphitos Tennis Club. Haas served very well on Day 3, not allowing even one break-point chance to the formidable world No. 5 Frenchman.

Haas, a runner-up in Munich 12 years ago, will face former Aussie Open runner- up Marcos Baghdatis in Friday's quarterfinals.

Three other seeds avoided upsets Wednesday, as No. 3 Croat Marin Cilic defeated German Matthias Bachinger 6-3, 6-2, No. 6 Russian Mikhail Youzhny overcame Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-4 and a No. 8 Baghdatis, of Cyprus, came back to top Jamaican qualifier Dustin Brown 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Youzhny titled here in 2010 and is a two-time runner-up in Munich. Cilic lost to Youzhny in the BMW final two years ago.

Youzhny and Cilic will meet in a rematch of the 2010 final on Friday.

This week's winner will earn $95,000.
