Haren, Hunter help Angels top Tribe

Cleveland, OH – Dan Haren threw eight strong innings, Torii Hunter hit a solo homer and the Angels snapped a five-game losing streak on Saturday with a 2-1 win over the Indians.

Haren (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in his fifth start, striking out seven and giving up just four hits, two walks and a run.

"He throws a great amount of off-speed stuff and then when he throws a fastball he just [fires] it by you," said Indians manager Manny Acta. "He's a great pitcher. He's been doing it for a while now."

Indians starter Jeanmar Gomez (1-1) also struck out seven but took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings.

The start of the game was delayed almost 2 1/2 hours by rain. The Indians won the opener of the three-game series 3-2 on Asdrubal Cabrera's RBI single in the ninth inning Friday.

The teams combined for just nine hits and no player had more than one.

Angels first baseman Albert Pujols went 1-for-4 with a single and saw his average inch up to .226 for the season, but remains without a home run 21 games into his first season in the American League.

"I think he swung the bat a little better," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "His power with be there."

Howie Kendrick drew a one-out walk in the first inning and scored after back- to-back singles by Pujols and Kendrys Morales to give the Angels a 1-0 lead.

Both teams were quiet offensively until Hunter led off the fourth with his second homer of the season to make it 2-0.

The Indians scratched out their only run in the bottom of the fourth after Jason Kipnis hit a leadoff single, went to second base on Cabrera's walk and scored on Jack Hannahan's two-out single.

The middle of Cleveland's order came up in the ninth inning, but Scott Downs retired Travis Hafner, Carlos Santana and Hannahan in order for his first save of the season.

Game Notes

The Angels released veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu after Friday's loss...The Indians were just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded five while the Angels went 1-for-6 and left six men on base.
