Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jeremy Hellickson was hit in the head by a ball during batting practice before Wednesday's game against the Tigers at Comerica Park.
Hellickson was alert and responsive and was taken to a nearby hospital for observation.
The reigning American League Rookie of the Year is off to a 1-0 start this season after tossing 8 2/3 scoreless innings against the Yankees on Sunday.
