National Hockey League Playoff Game Capsules

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the go-ahead goal with 7:18 remaining in the third period as the Washington Capitals edged the New York Islanders 2-1 on Monday night in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. History wasn't on the Capitals' side in Game 7s, but they did just enough to advance to the second round. Washington will next face the top-seeded New York Rangers, the fifth playoff meeting between the clubs in the last seven years. Braden Holtby needed to make only 10 saves for Washington, which improved to 4-9 in Game 7s, including 3-7 at home. Jaroslav Halak made 24 saves for the Islanders, who have not advanced past the first round since 1993.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 5, Detroit 2

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Killorn's third-period goal provided some much-needed breathing room as the Tampa Bay Lightning forced a Game 7 with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Tyler Johnson continued to shine with his third two-goal game of the playoffs, Jason Garrison and Cedric Paquette also lit the lamp and Nikita Kucherov tallied three assists for the Lightning, who will look to wrap up the series at home on Wednesday. Ben Bishop made 22 saves in the important victory. The last time Tampa Bay was down 3-2 on the road in the playoffs was in 2004, when it won the final two games against the Calgary Flames and hoisted the Stanley Cup. Tomas Tatar gave Detroit life with two goals and Petr Mrazek, who was coming off a 28-save shutout in Game 5, stopped 23 shots in defeat.
