Monroe leads balanced attack as Pistons drop Wizards

Greg Monroe led five Pistons in double figures with 18 points and Detroit defeated the Wizards 99-94 at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Thursday.

Rodney Stuckey returned from a three-game absence to score 15 points, Tayshaun Prince chipped in 14 and Ben Gordon and Jason Maxiell tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively, helping the Pistons secure their third straight victory.

John Wall scored a game-high 28 points to go with 10 assists and Kevin Seraphin added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Wizards, who dropped their fourth consecutive contest.

A back-and-forth first quarter found the Pistons in front by just two before closing the quarter on a 7-2 surge to take a 28-21 edge into the second.

Detroit propelled the lead to 12 after a 6-0 sprint found the home team holding a 40-28 lead just over five minutes into the second quarter.

The lead dipped as low as eight in the second, but the Pistons maintained a 51-40 advantage heading into the locker room.

The Pistons led by 13 after a jumper from Maxiell with 5:32 left in the third, and tallied the final six points of the quarter to take a 76-64 edge into the final frame.

After Brian Cook started the fourth quarter scoring with a dunk, the Pistons reeled off 10 straight points to extend the margin to 86-66 with 9:19 left in the fourth.

An answer came from Washington in the form of an 11-1 surge, pulling the Wizards back within 10 just before the midway point of the frame.

The lead was down to seven after Wall converted a layup with 2:43 to play, but neither team registered a field goal the rest of the way and the Pistons made enough free throws to hang on for the victory.
