The New York Yankees acquired catcher Chris Stewart from the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, and optioned backstop Francisco Cervelli to Triple-A.

Stewart, 30, put up the best numbers of his brief career last year, hitting .204 with three homers, eight doubles and 10 RBI in 67 games for the Giants.

Heading to the Bay Area is right-handed pitcher George Kontos.

Cervelli batted .266 with four homers and 22 RBI in 43 games for the Yankees in 2011. The 26-year-old Venezuelan is a .272 hitter with five homers and 71 RBI in 181 appearances over the last four seasons for New York.

He departs for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre having hit a two-run homer in the Yankees' 8-3 exhibition win over the Mets.
