The Boston Red Sox announced Tuesday that pitcher Andrew Bailey will undergo thumb surgery.

"Andrew Bailey was examined yesterday by Dr. Mark Belsky and Dr. Matthew Leibman in Boston and today by Dr. Thomas Graham in Cleveland," the club said in a statement. "It was determined that Andrew should undergo surgery to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb. The surgery is scheduled to be performed by Dr. Graham tomorrow in Cleveland."

The 27-year-old right-hander was dealt to the Sox from Oakland in late December, then signed to a one-year deal in January which avoided arbitration. He was 0-4 with a 3.24 earned run average and converted 24 saves in 42 games for the A's last year.
