Mariners place Carp on DL

Seattle Mariners outfielder Mike Carp was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday after suffering a sprained right shoulder.

Carp was hurt during Wednesday's opener against Oakland in Japan, diving for a Kurt Suzuki double in the fourth inning. He remained in the game and finished 0-for-4 before an examination afterward revealed the injury.

In 79 games last season, after being recalled in June, Carp belted 12 homers, drove in 46 runs and batted .276. He had appeared in a total of 35 games over the previous two seasons.

Carp could return for Seattle's home opener, coincidentally against Oakland, on April 13.

The Mariners recalled outfielder Carlos Peguero from Triple-A Tacoma to fill the roster spot. Peguero accompanied the Mariners to Tokyo as part of a 30-man roster, but was not on the active roster for the opening game.
