Neumann tabbed as 2013 European Solheim Cup team captain

Rancho Mirage, California – Liselotte Neumann was selected as the captain of the European Solheim Cup team on Wednesday.

Neumann, a six-time Solheim Cup performer, will follow two-time captain Alison Nicholas as the leader of the European team. Neumann was one of Nicholas' assistant captains in 2009.

"I am extremely happy and honored to have been selected as the European Solheim Cup Captain in 2013," Neumann said. "This event has always been very special for women's golf and it brings back wonderful memories of my years on the team. I want to thank the selection committee and the players for placing their trust in me and I look forward to the challenge of defending the title on U.S. soil next year."

The selection of Neumann comes months after Annika Sorenstam took her name out of the running. Sorenstam, along with having a pair of young children, oversees several business ventures including a golf academy in Florida and had been in the running to design the Olympic golf course.

Sorenstam did not get chosen as the course designer for the Olympics, and now will have to wait until at least 2015 to be the European team captain.

Neumann played on six straight European Solheim Cup teams from 1990-2000, posted an overall record of 6-10-5.

Among the Swede's 27 worldwide titles were 13 on the LPGA Tour and six more on the Ladies European Tour. Her biggest victories included her first LPGA Tour title, which came at the 1998 U.S. Women's Open, and the 1994 Women's British Open, which didn't become a major until the 2001 season.

Neumann will face off against Meg Mallon, who was named captain of the United States Solheim Cup team earlier this year.

The Europeans claimed a 15-13 win last year at the Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle in Ireland. It was the Europeans first win in the event since 2003. The U.S. team will try to reclaim the Solheim Cup at Colorado Golf Club next August.
