Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros had successful surgery Wednesday morning to remove a small disc fragment in his lower back.

"Andrej [Meszaros] had successful surgery this morning to remove a disc fragment that was impinging on a nerve root," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said on the team's Twitter account. "He will be discharged from the hospital later today. His rehab will begin in 1 week."

Meszaros has missed Philadelphia's last 10 games due to the injury. He has seven goals and 18 assists in 62 contests this season.

The 26-year-old is expected be out of action for 6-to-8 weeks, which means he will not be ready until the second round of the playoffs at the earliest.
