Smith and the 49ers have agreed to terms on a three-year deal, bringing back the quarterback who led San Francisco to a 13-3 record and an NFC West championship in 2011.
The Niners were reportedly one of three teams on Peyton Manning's short list of potential suitors before the former Colt landed in Denver. Because of those rumors, Smith had been in discussions with Miami before the Dolphins signed David Garrard, instead.
Smith started all 16 regular season games for San Francisco last season and helped the 49ers to a postseason win over the Saints before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game.
He threw for 3,144 yards and 17 touchdowns on 445 attempts and rushed 52 times for 179 yards and two TDs during the regular season campaign.
In six NFL seasons, all with the Niners, the 27-year-old Utah product has recorded 1,959 pass attempts, completing 1,137 for 12,543 yards and 68 touchdowns. Smith has also rushed for 629 yards and 4 TDs on 181 attempts.
