David Nalbandian and Nikolay Davydenko round winners at the $4.695 million BNP Paribas Masters, the first ATP World Tour Masters event of the year.

Nalbandian, of Argentina, ousted Italy's Potito Starace 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 while Russia's Davydenko got past Ukrainian Sergei Bubka 7-5, 6-3 on the hardcourts at the beautiful Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Former Aussie Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis moved on with a 6-3, 6-4 handling of Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

On-the-mend former world No. 2 German Tommy Haas advanced with a 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 victory over Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen, while capable Belgian Xavier Malisse mauled American journeyman and qualifier Bobby Reynolds 6-2, 6-4 on Day 2.

Other opening-round winners were American Denis Kudla, France's Michael Llodra, Argentine Carlos Berlocq, Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, American Ryan Sweeting, Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic, Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci, Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, Belgium's Steve Darcis and Leonardo Mayer of Argentina. The wild card Kudla should have his hands full with three-time Indian Wells champion Roger Federer on Sunday.

This week's top seeds are Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Federer and Andy Murray. Djokovic, Nadal and Federer have combined to win seven of the last eight Indian Wells championships.

Djokovic beat fellow two-time winner Nadal in last year's marquee Indian Wells finale.

Nadal is the all-time leader with a whopping 19 Masters titles.

The 2012 Indian Wells champion will collect $1 million.
