Seahawks release veteran CB Trufant

The Seattle Seahawks have decided to part ways time cornerback Marcus Trufant.

"Out of respect for Marcus and his family, we've decided to release him today so that he has an opportunity to explore the full window of unrestricted free agency and the options that go along with it," Seattle GM John Schneider said on Wednesday. "Marcus has done so much for this organization, but because of the changing landscape of the NFL, tough decisions have to be made and this is the correct thing to do at this time."

The 31-year-old was limited to just four games a season ago thanks to lingering back issues, during which he totaled 23 tackles.

A Washington State product and first-round draft pick in 2003, over his nine- year tenure with the franchise, Trufant ranks fifth in total interceptions (21) and 10th in tackles (604), and was voted a member of the Seahawks' 35th anniversary team.

He was selected to participate in the 2007 Pro Bowl after posting 85 tackles and seven interceptions -- including one for a touchdown -- over 16 games.
