Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Taiwanese qualifier Su-Wei Hsieh interrupted Malaysian Open.
Hsieh, 26, was leading 2-6, 7-5, 4-1 in Sunday's final when fifth-seeded and fellow first-time finalist Petra Martic of Croatia retired due to exhaustion.
Earlier in the day, the 21-year-old Martic outlasted second-seeded Serbian wild card Jelena Jankovic 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in a semifinal lasting more than three hours. The match had been originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed due to rain.
The 123rd-ranked Hsieh was a semifinalist last month at Pattaya City.
At the time, it matched her previous best result on the WTA tour. She also advanced to the semifinals at Bali in 2001.
Hsieh pocketed $37,000 for the win.
The tournament was plagued by rain delays all week.
