Denny Hamlin edged defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and won the pole Saturday for Saturday afternoon’s Bashas Supermarkets 200 Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway.
Hamlin ran 132.979 miles per hour in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to earn the first starting spot in the second Nationwide race of the season.
A close second was Stenhouse Jr. at 132.920.
Completing the top five were Kenny Wallace, Kasey Kahne and Trevor Bayne.
Danica Patrick qualified 30th, six miles per hour off the pole pace.
Jennifer Jo Cobb was the only driver who failed to qualify.
The race is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. ET.
