Denny Hamlin will start on the pole for Saturday's Bashas' Supermarkets 200 Nationwide Series race after edging Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in qualifying at Phoenix International Raceway.
Hamlin, a Sprint Cup Series regular, turned a lap at 132.979 m.p.h. around the flat, one-mile track for his 16th career Nationwide pole. It's the third time he has claimed the top starting position for a Nationwide race at Phoenix. Hamlin is driving the No. 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.
Stenhouse, the defending Nationwide champion, qualified just 0.012 seconds behind Hamlin to take the outside pole.
Kenny Wallace will start third, followed by Kasey Kahne and Trevor Bayne.
Hornish Jr. won his first Nationwide race last November at Phoenix.
Kyle Busch, the defending race winner, qualified 14th in his No. 54 Toyota. Busch started on the pole and led all 200 laps at this track one year ago, driving the No. 18 car for JGR at the time.
Danica Patrick will start 30th. Last week, Patrick claimed the pole position for the season-opener at Daytona International Speedway. She joined Shawna Robinson as the only females to win a pole in the series.
Jennifer Jo Cobb was the only driver who failed to qualify for this race, which is scheduled to start just after 4:30 p.m. (et).
