The San Francisco 49ers retained one of exclusive franchise tag on safety Dashon Goldson.

Goldson is coming off the best season of his five-year career, ranking second among NFL safeties with six interceptions. The 27-year-old also recorded 67 tackles and nine passes defenses over 14 regular-season starts to earn a first-ever Pro Bowl nod.

A fourth-round selection by the Niners in the 2007 draft, Goldson has started 46 games and garnered 11 interceptions over the past three seasons. He would make approximately $6.2 million in 2012 if he agrees to the one-year tender.

"By using the franchise tag on Dashon, it affords us the opportunity to continue to work on a long-term contract with him, while also ensuring he will be a 49er for a sixth season in 2012," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said.
