Storrs, CT – Connecticut men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun underwent surgery on Monday for a painful back condition that has forced him to take a leave of absence.
Calhoun has been suffering from spinal stenosis and Monday's procedure included the removal of a disk fragment that was pressing on a spinal nerve. He is expected to remain hospitalized at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City overnight and will likely be released Tuesday. He is also expected to make a full recovery.
"I am very fortunate to have been treated by three of the very best surgeons," Calhoun said. "My heartfelt thanks to them and the entire Beth Israel community, who have made every effort to ensure my stay is as comfortable as possible. Lastly, thank you to the people across Connecticut and beyond who have reached out to offer their support. It means a great deal."
The Huskies have played the last seven games without Calhoun, who will miss Tuesday's game against Providence. His status for Saturday's regular-season finale against Pittsburgh has yet to be determined.
George Blaney has guided the Huskies to a 3-4 mark since Calhoun took his medical leave. UConn is 17-11 overall and 7-9 in the Big East.
