Freestyle skier Burke dies

Freestyle skier Sarah Burke died Thursday, a little more than a week after suffering serious injuries in a training accident. She was 29 years old.

The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association posted on its Facebook page that Burke died in a Salt Lake City hospital. Burke had been in critical condition following her January 10 accident, which happened while she was skiing in Park City, Utah, at a sponsor event.

Burke won four Winter X Games gold medals in superpipe and was considered to be one of the top halfpipe riders in the world.

She played an instrumental role in having her sport included in the Olympics for the first time. It will debut at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.
