Former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano has been named the new offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, replacing Brian Schottenheimer.

The Jets and Schottenheimer amicably parted ways Tuesday night after six seasons.

Sparano was in his fourth year with the Dolphins when he was fired on December 12. Miami started the 2011 campaign with seven straight losses, then won four of its next five games before a loss to Philadelphia sealed his fate.

The Dolphins won the AFC East in Sparano's first season of 2008, beating the Jets at the Meadowlands on the final day of the season to secure the title and complete the NFL's greatest one-season turnaround. Miami went from 1-15 in 2007 to 11-5 in '08.

However, the team sputtered to 7-9 finishes each of the next two seasons, ending each year with three-game skids.

Prior to his run with the Dolphins, Sparano had a five-year stint as an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys. He was also an assistant with the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars, and was a head coach on the collegiate level with Division II New Haven from 1994-98.

Schottenheimer's offense ranked 25th in the NFL this past season and the unit especially came under fire during the Jets' three-game slide to end an 8-8 season.
