New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has told the team that he will not return for the 2012 season.

The Jets announced on their Twitter that Schottenheimer would not return while ESPN is reporting that the team will hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano to replace him.

Schottenheimer had interviewed for the Jacksonville job, but that position was filled on Tuesday night by former Atlanta offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.

New York lost its final three games of the season to miss the playoffs while finishing 8-8.

The offense, which finished the season ranked 25th in the NFL, failed to break the 20-point mark in any of those three games.

Earlier in the season, the Jets denied a story that three wide receivers went to head coach Rex Ryan to question the job being done by Schottenheimer.
