Glenn to debut at South Dakota against former school

Joe Glenn's first game as the University of South Dakota's head football coach will be a homecoming to Montana, the program with which he won the 2001 FCS national title.

Both teams will open the 2012 season on Sept. 1 in Missoula, Mont., USD director of athletics David Sayler announced Monday.

The Coyotes will receive a cash guarantee for the 2012 game. The two schools also have negotiated a home-and-home series the following two seasons, with Montana visiting USD on Nov. 9, 2013, and the Coyotes returning to Missoula on Sept. 13, 2014.

Glenn compiled a 39-6 record in three seasons as Montana's head coach from 2000-02. His 2001 squad set a school record with 15 wins en route to a 15-1 record and the Division I-AA (now FCS) national title.

"What a terrific way to begin our season with such a quality opponent," Glenn said. "Certainly this will be an emotional game for me. However, this will be a terrific marking point for our program. We respectfully accept the challenge."

USD, which was 6-5 this past season as a member of the Great West Football Conference, will begin play in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2012. Montana finished this past season with an 11-3 record and as a national semifinalist.
