City lodges Kompany appeal

Manchester City confirmed that the club has lodged an appeal against the red card given to defender Vincent Kompany in Sunday's FA Cup third round match against Manchester United.

Kompany received a straight red card in the 12th minute of City's 3-2 defeat for a two-footed challenge on United's Nani, which was deemed by referee Chris Foy to be worthy of an early dismissal.

"City have today lodged an appeal with the Football Association relating to the red card issued to Vincent Kompany during Sunday's FA Cup tie with Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium," read a statement released on the club's official website.

"The FA have confirmed that a hearing will be held ahead of Wednesday evening's Carling Cup semifinal first leg at home to Liverpool."

Kompany has been one of the best defenders in the league this season and he will be facing a four-match ban if his appeal is turned down.
