Newcastle hammers United

Manchester United fell three points off 0 defeat to Newcastle at Sports Direct Arena on Wednesday.

Manchester City's 3-0 win over Liverpool on Tuesday moved the Citizens three points clear of United, with Sir Alex Ferguson's team failing to keep up after conceding goals to Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye before a late own goal from Phil Jones doomed the Red Devils to a second successive loss.

Newcastle entered the match having lost four of its last six games, but after a close call in the opening 15 minutes that saw a deflected header from United's Dimitar Berbatov strike the post, the Magpies took over.

The first goal arrived after 33 minutes when a long ball from goalkeeper Tim Krul was flicked into the penalty area by the head of Shola Ameobi. Ba then did the rest as he beat United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard with a right- footed shot on the turn that sailed inside the left post.

United fell two goals behind in the 47th minute with a brilliant free kick from Cabaye, whose shot from 30 yards struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the goal line despite Lindegaard getting a piece of the ball.

Wayne Rooney thought he had pulled United to within a goal just before the hour mark when his shot from six yards beat Krul, only for defender Danny Simpson to block the ball on the goal line.

Jones capped a miserable night for the visitors in the 90th minute when Krul's long ball skipped into the area and the United man redirected the ball into his own net.

Bolton 2, Everton 1

Liverpool, England - Bolton moved off the bottom of the league on Wednesday after getting goals from David Ngog and Gary Cahill in the final 25 minutes of a 2-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

Toffees goalkeeper Tim Howard stunningly scored the opening goal in the 63rd minute when he cleared the ball from his own penalty area and watched it bounce over the head of Bolton netminder Adam Bogdan and into the net.

But the visitors answered within four minutes through Ngog, who did well to turn with the ball and fire it past Howard to level the contest.

Cahill then put Bolton into the lead 12 minutes from time when a failed clearance allowed Chris Eagles to lay a ball off for the England international to finish.

Everton nearly equalized from a Leighton Baines free kick, but his effort crashed off the crossbar.
