New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he 8 and failed to make the playoffs for the first time during his three-year tenure.

Ryan addressed the media on Monday, a day after the Jets dropped a 19-17 decision in Miami.

"When you don't succeed the way we expected to succeed this year, it's extremely painful," Ryan said Monday.

The Jets reached the AFC Championship Game in each of Ryan's first two seasons at the helm. They were 8-5 with three games to play in December, but lost to the Eagles, Giants and Dolphins to conclude a disappointing campaign.

"My job is to build a team, and for whatever reason, we weren't as close a football team as in the past two years," the normally boastful Ryan humbly stated.

There were reports of discord among players, as well as issues between players and coaches during the season, and as some cleaned out their lockers on Monday, there were reports of expressions of frustration.

Linebacker Bart Scott, according to multiple reports, made an obscene gesture with his finger toward a photographer, while the Newark Star-Ledger reported that wide receiver Santonio Holmes was escorted out of the locker room by members of the Jets' public relations staff.

Holmes was at the center of controversy on Sunday in Miami. He did not catch a pass for the first time in his career during the contest and was reportedly benched late in the fourth quarter after a heated exchange with a teammate in the offensive huddle.

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer apparently made the call to bench Holmes, something that Ryan was unaware of on Sunday after the game.

"I thought, honestly, Santonio pulled himself," Ryan said Monday. "I wanted to get all the facts. After seeing what happened, I think Brian did the right thing."

Holmes, on Sunday, did not give a response when asked if he would return to the Jets next season, but Ryan indicated that he believed the receiver that signed a long-term contract as a free agent in the offseason would be back.

"For the two years he's been here, he's been a tremendous player for us," Ryan remarked. "He's won a bunch of games for us, he's been a good teammate.

"There's a lot of positive things about Santonio. Are there some things we need to get corrected? Absolutely, but that goes for everything. I believe Santonio will be back next year."

As for Schottenheimer, that could be a different story. Ryan dismissed talk that Schottenheimer would not return as offensive coordinator last week, but he will interview with the Jaguars for their vacant head coaching position.

"Here's a guy that's been successful, he knows how to develop players," Ryan said of Schottenheimer.

Ryan also indicated that he made a mistake in appointing team captains. Holmes was named a captain this year, and there were players who believed he did not earn such a distinction.

"I think I made a huge mistake, not just making Santonio a captain, but having captains in general," Ryan said. "We're not going to have those anymore. It may work for other franchises, it doesn't work for me. I think that recognizes individuals and not the team. I look at it now and it was a mistake."
