The condition of Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been upgraded to 'good,' the team announced in a statement Friday.

Phillips underwent surgery on his kidney and gallbladder, and the team said Thursday that he was in stable condition. Houston released another update a day later.

"Wade Phillips continues to improve from his surgery," the statement said. "His condition has been upgraded to good. Again, the family requests privacy and no further information will be released at this time."

Phillips announced Wednesday that he would take a medical leave from the team after undergoing a scheduled surgical procedure, but he is expected to return to his duties later this season.

The AFC South champion Texans own the NFL's top-ranked defensive unit under Phillips, who was hired in January after being fired as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys last November.

In the interim, linebackers coach Reggie Herring will call the defense. Herring coached the linebackers with Dallas from 2008-10 under Phillips.
