Arkansas State has named Gus Malzahn its new head football coach.

Malzahn spent the past three seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Auburn. He will replace Hugh Freeze, who left the Red Wolves after just one season to take the vacancy at Ole Miss.

A native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Malzahn helped Auburn to the 2010 national championship. He also coached Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton that season and was selected as the Broyles Award winner as the top assistant coach in the nation.

Malzahn has also been an assistant at Tulsa from 2007-08 and Arkansas in 2006. Prior to his collegiate tenure, Malzahn was a high school head coach for 14 years in Arkansas, winning three state championships.
