The Boston Red Sox signed catcher Kelly Shoppach year contract on Tuesday.
Shoppach batted a career-low .176 with 11 home runs and 22 RBI in 87 games played with the Tampa Bay Rays last year.
The 31-year-old threw out 36.6 percent of potential base stealers last season, which ranked second among MLB qualifying catchers.
Drafted by the Red Sox in 2001, he is a career .224 hitter with 59 home runs and 180 RBI over 460 games in seven seasons with Boston, Cleveland and Tampa Bay.
