Antonio Valencia then set up goals for both Nani and Rooney midway through the second half to put the result out of reach.
His first low cross was finished off by Nani from inside the six-yard box and he set up a nice half-volley for Rooney six minutes later to give the England international his 11th goal of the campaign.
United trails leaders Manchester City by two points ahead of City's away match at Chelsea on Monday with Wolves losing for the third time in four games to sit three points above the drop zone.

London, England - Arsenal's good run of form continued on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium as a stunning volley from Robin van Persie in the second half proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Arsenal win over Everton.
The match lacked much attacking flair but Van Persie's moment of brilliance brought the game to life as he got on the other end of a chipped pass from Alex Song to volley the ball off the post and into the net on the run.
It was a fantastic finish from the Dutchman, who leads the league with 15 goals on the season, and it extends the Gunners unbeaten run to eight games.
Everton has lost four of its last six contests to drop to 12th.
Aston Villa 2, Bolton 1
Bolton, England - Bolton slipped to the bottom of the league on Saturday after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at the Reebok Stadium.
First-half goals from Marc Albrighton and Stiliyan Petrov put Villa in the lead while Bolton was only able to manage a single goal early in the second half from Ivan Klasnic.
Bolton has lost its last four games to fall three points from safety with Villa securing its first away win of the campaign to sit in eighth place.
Liverpool 1, QPR 0
Liverpool, England - Luis Suarez helped Liverpool to a 1-0 win over QPR at Anfield on Saturday as he scored early in the second half to give the Reds their second win in five games.
Home draws with Norwich City and Swansea City dropped the club down the table, and after dominating play in the first half but failing to score it looked like more of the same.
But Suarez popped up in the 47th minute to tally the game's only goal as he headed home Charlie Adam's left-wing cross to hand the hosts all three points.
QPR has recorded only one win from its last six games to slip into the bottom half of the table.
Norwich City 4, Newcastle 2
Norwich, England - Two goals in the second half from Grant Holt allowed Norwich City to claim a 4-2 win over Newcastle at Carrow Road on Saturday.
The two sides traded goals in the first half with Wesley Hoolahan firing the Canaries in front before his opener was canceled out by Demba Ba on the stroke of halftime.
Holt's first goal of the contest put Norwich into the lead and Steve Morison doubled the advantage a few minutes later.
Newcastle's Dan Gosling was sent off in the 66th minute for picking up a second yellow card, and although Ba still managed to bring Newcastle to within a goal, Holt killed off the match with his second tally of the game eight minutes from time.
After such a bright start to the season, the Magpies have hit a rough patch with just one point from their last four games.
Swansea City 2, Fulham 0
Swansea, Wales - Swansea City needed some late heroics from goalkeeper Michel Vorm in a 2-0 win over Fulham at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.
Scott Sinclair put the hosts ahead 1-0 with a goal in the 56th minute, but Fulham was awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute when Jazz Richards brought down Karim Frei inside the penalty area.
Clint Dempsey stepped to the spot for the Cottagers but his effort was saved by Worm, and Swansea sealed the win in stoppage time with a goal from substitute Danny Graham.
Wigan 2, West Bromwich 1
West Bromwich, England - Wigan moved off the bottom of the league on Saturday with a 2-1 comeback win over West Bromwich at The Hawthorns.
The Latics fell behind in the 33rd minute courtesy of a goal from Steven Reid, but answered back quickly as Victor Moses found the net four minutes later to level the match.
Moses then drew a foul on Reid inside the penalty area in the 57th minute and Jordi Gomez fired home the spot kick to give Wigan a second straight win away from home and move the club one point clear of the drop zone.
