Carl Hagelin scored twice to lead the New York Rangers to a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night, giving the franchise its 2,500th regular-season win.
Hagelin, playing his eighth NHL game, and Ryan Callahan scored short-handed goals, and Martin Biron made 32 saves to help the Rangers become the fifth NHL team to reach the milestone.
Marian Gaborik added a power-play goal for New York. Biron, who played 300 games for Buffalo earlier in his career, improved to 9-3-1 against the Sabres.
Thomas Vanek scored for Buffalo, which is 2-5-2 in its last nine home games. Jhonas Enroth stopped 29 shots in his sixth loss in seven decisions (1-5-1).
Callahan broke a 1-1 tie with 1:09 left in the second period, driving alone to the net after an errant pass by Christian Ehroff at the Rangers' blue line. The New York captain was covered by Ehrhoff, but still pushed a low shot behind Enroth.
Hagelin opened the scoring with 7:26 left in the second period, wristing a shot high over Enroth's glove with 2 seconds left on a Buffalo power play.
Vanek tied it 1:04 later, with his slap shot from the high slot trickling past Biron.
Hagelin scored his second goal of the game — and only the third of his NHL career — 3:02 into the third period. He fired a slap shot from the left circle after receiving a long lead pass from Michael Del Zotto at the blue line. Del Zotto received a shorter pass from Biron to begin the sequence.
Gaborik scored his 14th on a slap shot from the high slot with 2:34 remaining.
The Rangers, 13-3-1 in their last 17 games, snapped a two-game losing skid.
Buffalo had four injured players scratched in addition to four others who are on the injured reserve list.
