Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton has been suspended indefinitely for his hit on Hurricanes forward Alexei Ponikarovsky in Wednesday's game.

The NHL announced the suspension Thursday and Sutton has been offered an in- person hearing to determine the length of the suspension.

During the third period, Sutton left his feet while hitting Ponikarovsky from behind near the boards with the primary point of contact being the head.

Sutton was already suspended five games earlier in the season for a similar hit on Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog.
