LSU sophomore cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has captured the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player.

Mathieu, also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, led the top-ranked and undefeated Tigers with 70 tackles, six forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.

Mathieu also ran two punts back for touchdowns, including a 62-yard TD that got LSU out of a first-half funk in the SEC title game against Georgia.

Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower and Penn State defensive tackle Devon Still were the other finalists for the honor.

LSU's Patrick Peterson won the award last year.
