Panthers QB Newton among NFC players of the week

Rookie Cam Newton became the first Carolina Panthers quarterback in more than three years to be selected as an NFC Player of the Week.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker David Hawthorne and Green Bay Packers punter Tim Masthay were also honored on Wednesday.

Newton passed for 204 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 54 yards and three scores in Sunday's 38-19 win over Tampa Bay. The No. 1 overall draft pick set an NFL record with 13 rushing touchdowns this season.

He also won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month in September. Jake Delhomme was the last Panthers quarterback to be named Player of the Week in 2008.

Hawthorne had a 77-yard interception return for a touchdown and posted six tackles in a 31-14 win over Philadelphia on Thursday, winning the defensive award.

Masthay had a net average of 44.2 yards per punt in a 38-35 win over the Giants, placing four of his five punts inside the 20-yard line to earn special teams honors.
