Fayetteville, AR – Arkansas junior forward Marshawn Powell will miss the remainder of the season because of a knee injury.
Powell was hurt during practice last Thursday and sat out Arkansas' 87-78 loss to Houston the following day. An MRI exam on Sunday revealed torn ligaments and surgery will keep him sidelined for the next 6-to-8 months.
A preseason second-team All-SEC pick, Powell averaged team bests of 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of wins to start the campaign.
"This is a big blow to Marshawn and our basketball team," said Arkansas head coach Mike Anderson. "He has been working hard on and off the court this year and was in the best shape of his career. This is definitely a setback, but I told him that sometimes you have to have setbacks in order to have a great comeback. He is in good spirits and looking forward to helping his team in any way that he can."
Powell was Arkansas' second-leading scorer and rebounder last season, averaging 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds, despite suffering from foot injuries. He was also selected to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2009-10 after averaging 14.9 points and 6.7 rebounds.
